Dr. Phil Sayings

Here is a list of ten phrases that I've heard on Dr. Phill the last couple of months. The first two are my favorite.

You need to be sensitive enough to tune-in and embrace.
A snicker bar never says no, does it?
Your really do teach people how to treat you.
I think your family's in crisis.
Find his (a child's) currency that he cares about.
This is a tug of war game and you can NOT drop your end of the rope.
You have to find those pockets of time when you abuse.
Do you want to be right or do you want to be married?
Everyone of you has a personal truth that allows you to live a certain life.
You cannot deal with what you do not acknowledge

The worst jobs in science I think my favorite one is the anal wart researcher.

More Conference Topics

Two more topics came up in today's conferences. First, the idea of the writing process. The biggest challenge for all writing teachers is to help students to understand and use this process. The second topic that was discussed was research. Here are some links that discuss the writing process and research. We will be exploring these topics in more detail next semester in 102.

Rate Your Professor

Revenge, they say, is a dish best served cold. I would say it's better to serve it on the Internet, registering your complaint throughout the universe! Or you might choose to exude only positive Karma by saying nice comments about the great professors that have come into your life. Yes, they do exist, you cynic. Go ahead, rate my day!

BBC Documentary

An interesting point of view regarding the threat of terrorism. This actually an hour-long program so get the popcorn.

Conference topics

We just had a set of individual conferences with students today in 101. Several students brought questions or raised topics that I would like to share with the rest of the class. Below is a list of links that will help students find answers to those questions or to explore those topics.

1. Grammar-Many students ask me for help with this subject. While many would argue against the wisdom in explicitly teaching grammar, I strongly believe it can be a valuable tool if done well. While I do plan to make grammar a part of my class eventually at this point, I have yet to develop a good way to teach explicit grammar to students. Sorry but here are some links I found that might help until I figured it out.
Guide to Writing and Grammar
Modern English Grammar
Guide to Grammar and Style

2. What percentage of people in the US speak English? Great question and one for the census. Here is a link that gives percentages and other information about the US and Language.
A Guide for the Perplexed

3. Who are the neocons and what do they think?
Douglas Feith Straight from the horses mouth!
The Men Behind the Curtain Long but informational. You might suppose that it is somewhat against the neocon point of view if you could make it through the article without falling asleep or dying.
Neocons' Timeline to Iraq War Lots of good information.

Please help me evaluate these links. Let me know with what and if these links were helpful to you. Can you suggest any other links that might be helpful?

Nature

Tiananmen?

Well, not quite but still closer than I like to see. Supposedly, some sort of war protest in L.A. that happened recently.

Brain Candy

So many things to like about this site! I especially like the advertising slogans, good questions, and proverbs.

Famous Last Words

Fun AND morbid. How can you ask for more? Some of my favorites from this site include:

W.C. Fields (1880-1946)
"God damn the whole friggin' world and everyone in it but you, Carlotta."

Ernesto "Che" Guevara (1928-1967)
"I know you have come to kill me.  Shoot, coward. You are only going to kill a man."

Francisco "Pancho" Villa (Doroteo Arango) (1878-1923)
"Don't let it end like this. Tell them I said something."
